Competitive Analysis of 10 Fitness and Mindfulness Apps

The purpose of this competitive review was to investigate an array of products in the Home Fitness market niche that are both directly and indirectly competing with Samsung Health TV App for market share.

Background and Research Goal:  Samsung Health TV app is embedded within the main menu of apps on Samsung Smart TVs and provides customers with free service to a full video catalog from the following established fitness content providers: Calm, Jillian Michaels, Obe, Echelon, FitPlan and Daily Burn. Given the novelty of a Health streaming app provided by Samsung, a need existed to understand the landscape of Health Apps that compete with Samsung Health TV. The main goal of this review was to understand the Health App landscape based on stakeholder-defined dimensions for both design (e.g., features, information architecture and navigation) and product technical integration.

My Contributions: I led all project planning phases including: Drafted the study plan; secured stakeholder buy-in; led cross-functional brainstorming discussions that resulted establishing dimensions that formed the basis for review; independently reviewed products according to dimensions; packaged actionable insights into clear deliverable that was communicated to all stakeholders. 

Method: An expert review of 10 direct and indirect competitor Health Apps was conducted over the course of a month across both mobile apps and TV streaming media devices (SMDs): Five direct competitor TV Health apps were examined on Apple TV, Fire TV and Roku TV and Five indirect Mobile Health apps were examined using iOS.

Outcomes: The review resulted in a design inventory, documenting features, information architecture and navigation across all five direct competitors (TV Apps). Venn Diagrams were also generated to cross-examined similarities and differences between TV apps. For the indirect competitors (mobile Health Apps), a four-tiered pyramid was defined and generated based on varying types of technical integration that was examined through the review.

Impact: Insights were leveraged by Design and Product during brainstorming sessions and product planning discussions with Executives in HQ. New product features were generated based on insights. Additionally, a Sr. Product Director from another Product Area (PA) reached out requesting a similar review to be conducted for their PA.
